Military Gifts and Personalized Wood Signs
When A Simpler Time was conceived a dozen years ago, one current popular category conspicuously absent from our merchandise lineup was military gifts and military-themed wood signs.
Initially the rationale behind not carrying military-related gifts was that our concept was about growing up in "a simpler time," when cares were few and the hardest decision for a child to make each summer day was whether to fish, ride bikes or fly a kite. While we knew vintage-style gifts aimed at the armed services would be popular, we worried they wouldn't fit the youthful innocence of our theme.
It quickly became apparent that customers were looking for quality, nostalgic-themed Marine Corps, Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard gifts and were surprised we didn't carry them. After explaining our rationale to numerous customers, an offhand remark by one retired Marine changed our mind. "If it wasn't for the armed services," he said, "you wouldn't have enjoyed the carefree childhood you remember so well." It was a logic that was hard to argue with.
Only the Best Nostalgic Military-Themed Gifts
Our first, and still among our best selling, military gift items were our personalized wood replica pub signs that come in U.S. Marine, Navy, Army, Air Force and Coast Guard. With large official military seals in the middle of each sign surrounded by well known sayings and with a totally custom personalized name board hanging down on each one, they remain among our most popular gifts. Many customers give the military signs as retirement gifts—personalized with both the rank and the service years of the gift recipient. Our recently added armed service uniform histories make great gifts too. These framed histories are available for all branches of the military.
Surprisingly (at least to us initially) Marine Corps gift items, like famous Marine quotes on signs and a collection of framed postage stamps surrounding a short history of that service, were our top sellers. While we don't have a huge collection of Marine Corps product (we don’t carry what we wouldn’t want to get as a gift ourselves), what we do carry is classic.
Perhaps because one of our stores in New Orleans is close to a Coast Guard base, we also sell a surprising amount of U.S. Coast Guard-related signs, framed stamps and even model ships. But whether it be a U.S. Navy bell or an Army locking wood keepsake box, you can be assured that the military-themed gift you choose from A Simpler Time is quality at a fair price.
